Maybe you’ve stumbled over a killer niche with great keywords and no real competition, or maybe you’ve just found a twenty on the street which would nicely pay for lunch.

Rewards don’t come without risks.

Whatever it is, you just need to grab your opportunities when you see them, or face missing out on the good stuff.

Take today as an example…

Last night I was in the pub, my mate Steve and his wife just had a baby this week and we we’re observing that time honoured tradition of wetting the babies head (OK, it’s just an excuse for the lads to get together for a beer )

Well, today is a Bank Holiday here in the UK and my lovely wife has taken our kids over to Granny’s house for the day.

So here’s my prime opportunity…

I’ve had a plate full of crumpets and half an Easter Egg to combat the hangover, so which DVD trilogy do I now take back to bed for my duvet day?

X-Men, Star Wars, Matrix (or as they should be known – Matrices {plural!}) or Lord of The Rings?

To me this is just all wrong.

The thing is, although at times you need to pick a fight with your competitors, there are other times where you need to focus on what you’re doing and not spend time trash talking the other guy.

Now I’m not specifically talking about Microsoft vs Google here, I’m talking about what you focus and spend your precious time doing in your day to day businesses.

Think of it this way – Is it really worth spending five hours of your time this week focusing on the other guy, or would that time be better spent focusing on positively promoting your brand, your site, your product etc.

Don’t fall in the trap of constantly concentrating on what the other guys are doing, know when to focus on your stuff and at the same time be mindful of what else is going on in your market.

OK, spraff over, I’m off to help my kids make my wife breakfast in bed (well, it is mother’s day here in the UK and I suppose I should focus on what matters to me today )

So, to one and all, here’s hoping 2010 beings you all that you ever need and want.

And remember, the harder you work on taking action in a positive direction, the more you will achieve – don’t sweat the small stuff and concentrate on what matters.

People get entrenched with looking at the tools and trying to make solid links back to their sites, and often look at the wrong metrics to track their progress.

There should only be three questions you should be concentrating on:

Where is your site ranking and is it climbing?

How many unique visitors are you getting?

How many sales are you making?

Everything else is a means to these three aims.

Tools are there to leverage your time and help you achieve these three aims, and you should concentrate on producing regular, quality content and getting it indexed and ranked to drive traffic and make sales.

So my message is this – stop focussing on the little things which waste your time and concentrate on the things which get you ranked and visitors to your sites.

The thing that’s cheered me up is that a new app has come out for the iPhone for WordPress, and this quick post is being written on that very app.

I know, I know, it’s a geeky/nerd thing, but honestly – wow!

This app is so simple to use & makes posting remotely an absolute breeze. It’s way easier to use than logging on via Safari and has complete access to your blog.

Sometimes being market leader is a about reporting your news first, and this app makes that so super-simple it’s reeediculous (yes, the extra eeee’s are for effect & not a typo )

WordPress had an app out through a 3rd party, but this one was built in-house by the WP guys, and it shows.

Oh, and it’s FREE.

It’s called WordPress2 if ya wanna go check it out, I’m just about to give it 5 stars…

I can’t believe I’ve neglected my little corner of the internet world for this long.

For those rabid readers mentally willing me to make a post, then this one’s for you (well both of you, and you know who you are, yes you… and your imginary friend )

OK, so onto the needing feedback bit…

I’m thinking of making big changes round here, and for a few reasons.

First off, I want to do a redesign of the site.  I’m never really happy with other people’s themes, sure they’re good and it saves me the hassle of having to actually do any work on it, but I always find that the themes out there are always missing something that I want.

So I’m gonna redesign the site so it’s all about me, me, me.  I may even stick a picture of my ugly mug on it as well so you know it’s this particular Jon Dean and not some other random Jon Dean (who by the way isn’t as cool, or as good looking, or as funny, or as deluded as this particular Jon Dean).

Secondly, I’m thinking of doing some reports to give away for Christmas.

I know, I know, it’s only September and Christmas is ages away, but I figure if Tesco can start pushing Christmas good now then so can I :p

Besides, it’s gonna take me time to do the site redesign (hey, I do have a day job you know!) and it’s gonna take time to write the reports.

Anyways, I still realise I’ve not asked about the feedback I want from you!

Well, if I’m gonna spend time writing up reports to give away it would be better to actually do them on what your readers want to, you know, actually read.

So, I want you to either leave me a comment or submit a message via the Contact Us page, telling me exactly what topics you’d like me to cover in the reports and then I’ll get to work writing some more witty and educational prose for you.

When i started this blog I was determined not to have any form of advertising on it. No affiliate ads, links, banners… Nada.

However, I believe this one system is so good (and that it can help people develop and grow their internet empire) that I do feel I have to break the vow I originally set for myself.
